7 Awesome Examples Of Unnecessary "Quotation Marks" (PHOTOS)
the seemingly random use of quotation marks on signage has always gotten my goat - specifically because using quotation marks around a word or phrase in that context actually means that you are not using the word or phrase in it's literal true meaning but in a figurative sense - it's like putting the word supposedly in front of whatever you are surrounding in quotation marks - anyway here are some that hopefully were not intentional :)

what spot in the US is farthest from a mcdonalds?
(a spot)in South Dakota is the McFarthest Spot, the place in the US geographically most removed from the nearest McD’s (*). If you started out from this location, a few miles north of State Highway 20 (which runs latitudinally between Highways 73 in the west and 65 in the east), you’d have to drive 145 miles to get your Big Mac...

The Man Who Brought Halloween to Germany
In the mid-1990s, few in Germany had ever heard of Halloween, and even fewer celebrated it. Now, it's a €150 million a year industry. The holiday's success can be traced to a single marketing genius.

Wow dude, computers are gonna be way rad man!
Steve Allen and Jayne Meadows' Computer Video from 1984
it's longish but the little white dots on the playline at the bottom of the video shows the best parts by minute mark.
oh the days of floppy disks and black screens with green typeface.

i found it was tolerable when i played it in the background while i did my other stuff online.
With an Apple II, a Kaypro 2, cheeseball computer animation and a grab-bag of corny jokes, this is classic computing from the VHS era. Keep an eye out for references to Wargames, hackers, Boy George, Ronald Reagan, and more.

Deceptive Product Names
Product names don't necessarily reflect the truth of the products. Ever heard of Corinthian Leather? Think New Jersey, not Corinth, Greece. How about Häagen Dazs? Nothing Scandinavian about it. Read on to find out how a product's name can deceive you ...
Corinthian Leather
Sounds Like: Fancy leather from some exotic place in Europe - specifically, the Greek city of Corinth. The phrase "rich Corinthian leather" was made famous by actor Ricardo Montalban, in ads for Chrysler's luxury Cardoba in the 1970s. (The seats were covered with it.)
The Truth: There's no such thing as Corinthian leather. The term was made up by Chrysler's ad agency. The leather reportedly came from New Jersey.

the Barack and Bill Show - Barack's half hour commercial, Bill Clinton and Barack in Florida together, and Barack's appearance on the Daily Show
according to salon.com "Obama controls the vertical and the horizontal: From his 30-minute infomercial to his appearance on "The Daily Show," Obama took over the small screen on Wednesday to spread his message" - to which I would add the Clinton Barack joint appearance which is sure to get lots of "free airtime" from clips repeated on the news programas etc. Besides the phillies winning the world series - Wednesday certainly was the night of the O:

How Google Got it's Logo

if you are interested in graphic design, marketing, or google then this is an interesting read with all the alternative original logos:

In just a few short years, Google's logo has become as recognizable as Nike's swoosh and NBC's peacock. Ruth Kedar, the graphic designer who developed the now-famous logo, shows the iterations that led to the instantly recognizable primary colors and Catull typeface that define the Google brand.
one of my favorite things about google when it first arrived on the search scene in 2000 or so, for me at least, was the utter simplicity of the search page. remember how crowded and crazy yahoo and microsoft's search pages had become - totally crowded over with all sorts of blinking ads and such, it was nearly impossible to find the search box. remember the pages and pages of irrelevant links you could generate from a simple search in the other search engines of the time? i loved the simplicity and i loved the accurate results.
Guns and Roses - Chinese Democracy - album begun in 1994 is now being released. does it matter anymore?
"cha-na-na-na-na-knees!"
Chinese Democracy is the upcoming sixth studio album by the American rock band Guns N' Roses, to be released worldwide on November 23, 2008 and in the United Kingdom on November 24, 2008.[1] Once released, it will be their first album of original studio material since the simultaneous release of Use Your Illusion I and II in September 1991. In a 2007 interview, Axl Rose's close friend Sebastian Bach stated that Chinese Democracy will be the first installment in a trilogy of new albums. Bach also remarked that Rose had told him the third, as of yet untitled, album has been slated for 2012.[2] The retail release will be sold exclusively through Best Buy in the US.[3] The first single from the album, "Chinese Democracy", was released on October 22, 2008.[4] - wikipedia
