I got addicted to http://www.whynot.net/

basically an open source site to submit ideas for inventions or other "eureka" moments.

http://www.whynot.net/
is a site where people can contribute all those clever (or sometimes very unclever) ideas that we all come up with while daydreaming or doing some sort of drudgery and we truly say to ourselves "there must be a better way."

i stumbled upon it while looking for information on an idea I had for a roof-coating that would change from black to white based on the temperature outside and thus add or reflect heat from the sun based on weather it was winter or summer. someone on the site had made a similar suggestion and as i started to root around the site i found a lot of really clever ideas (and some big duds too - but that was part of the fun!)

you gotta register your email and pick a password but that's the whole registration process.

the site looks like it was founder around 2003 or so since some of the earliest ideas and comments are dated to then. newer comments are listed under older ones (i think they should reverse that since some of the ideas have already come to be or else are in development since the users first submitted them and i would rather see the up to date stuff first.) anyway....

for instance here is one simple idea that i really liked and thought would save enormous amounts of electricity nationwide and involve absolutely zero inconvenience:

Escalators in public places typically run all day long regardless of whether people are using them. Obviously the empty escalator is wasting energy. Why not equip escalators with sensors to determine whether a person is on (or approaching) the escalator? When the escalator senses a nearby passenger, it can start moving. When the passenger gets off, it can stop.

former US commander of all coalition forces in Iraq calls for truth commission

In front of a packed audience tonight at the Times Center in New York City, General Ricardo Sanchez, the former commander of all coalition forces in Iraq, called for a truth commission to investigate the abuses and torture which occurred there.

The General described the failures at all levels of civilian and military command that led to the abuses in Iraq, "and that is why I support the formation of a truth commission."

The General went on to say that, "during my time in Iraq there was not one instance of actionable intelligence that came out of these interrogation techniques."

since i have decided to stop typing two fingered...

i can type darn fast using two fingers... but only wheni am typing my own thoughts. what about when i want to read something and "transcribe" it?

i have been using the typing tutorial at the same place i am taking my college prep refresher courses, but i wanted one to work on at home as well....

TypingWeb is structured to take you from the home row all the way to efficiently using infrequent keys and key combination. There are also actually enjoyable typing games, unlike the lame typing games you may recall from grade school typing tutors. TypingWeb is free, but if you want to get rid of the ads, you can pay a one-time $9.99 fee to turn TypingWeb ad-free. Thanks Kratos!

do cops need to be tested for steroids?

(UPDATE 2 - A hulking Chicago police officer who claimed he pummeled a female bartender half his size because he thought he was in danger was found guilty Tuesday of aggravated battery.

Judge John Fleming rejected Anthony Abbate's claim that he acted in self defense when he threw, punched and kicked Karolina Obrycka as she tended bar in February 2007 in an attack caught on a tavern security tape that was played around the world.)

(UPDATE added additional examples below)

i can think of no other rational explanation for the hyper aggressive behavior displayed here. cops stop paramedics with patient in ambulance and then ....

Oklahoma's Tulsa World newspaper reports on a bizarre scuffle this past week after a highway patrol officer pulled over an ambulance that was carrying a patient headed for the hospital, but didn't have its siren on.

The patrolman apparently intended to issue a 'failure to yeild' citation to the ambulance driver, and was angered when he believed one of the paramedics gave him a middle finger.

Despite being told that the woman in the ambulance needed to get to the hospital, the trooper insisted that one of the paramedics be detained in his car. When he tried to handcuff a paramedic, a fight ensued, which was filmed by the husband of the patient.

Eventually the patrolman allowed the ambulance to go to the hospital. An investigation over the incident "has been turned over to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol's Internal Affairs Unit and a county prosecutor," the Tulsa World reports.

oh orwellian police state - when will we truly tire of you?

in this lovely little nugget we find:

Anthony Abbate, 40, faces one count of aggravated battery and two counts of official misconduct for the February 2007 incident. Prosecutors dropped several other charges before the trial began Monday, including intimidation, conspiracy and communicating with a witness.

Video footage from a tavern security camera shows Abbate punching, kicking and throwing a bartender to the floor.

and these dodo heads were all acquitted:
